Telling Another’s Story
JWWS Interviewing Course Given by: Bassi Gruen

You’re only living one life, but if you tap into the stories of those around you, you’ll have an endless trove of tales. In these two workshops, we’ll explore how to obtain and share other people’s stories.

Workshop 1: Getting the story

Some topics covered in workshop 1 include how to:

– Approach people for their story
– Prepare for the interview
– Ask strong questions and avoid lame ones
– Manage both garrulous interviewees and reticent ones
– PLUS the details to look out for, to lend color to your piece

Workshop 2: Turn interviews into stories

Some topics covered in workshop 1 include how to:

– Create a frame for your story
– Make it vivid for the reader
– Ensure the interviewee is comfortable with your story
– Pitching the story to publications
– PLUS how to use fiction techniques to make your non-fiction story sparkle

When: Tuesday mornings, 10:30 – 12:30, Jan. 17 and Jan. 31. (Please note this date change!)
